In 2024, Sri Lanka focused on significant rebuilding efforts. The country elected its first Marxist president, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leading the National People's Power (NPP) coalition, which secured a two-thirds majority in parliament. This provided a strong mandate for economic and anti-corruption reforms.
Economically, Sri Lanka showed signs of recovery, with the World Bank projecting 4.4% growth, driven by reforms, export boosts, and foreign investments. Japan resumed funding for major infrastructure projects, including airport expansion and healthcare improvements, committing $1.1 billion.
While progress was evident, challenges remained. The IMF emphasized the need for continued reforms to ensure long-term stability and growth.
