Daily UI - 003 - Calculation

Prompt: Design a calculation element or interface. Is it a standard calculator, a scientific one, or specialty calculator for something such as a home mortgage or auto loan? Is it to forecast a calculation such as for a credit score? Is it for a phone, a tablet, a web app?

Previous design: Actually, there’s no previous design. I’m not sure why I didn’t do this challenge back when I first started the Daily UI, but I’m pretty sure it was because I simply forgot. This time, I made sure not to skip it 😅.

Briefing: For this challenge, I decided to create a bounty calculator for Witchers to make their lives a bit easier, so let's pretend that Geralt has a mobile device in this universe 😂.

Based on what the books and games tell us, we know that the life of a Witcher is not only dangerous but also extremely busy. They travel across the continent in search of contracts to hunt monsters (which is already exhausting) and also have to deal with humans when negotiating contracts and rewards (which can be equally challenging). With that in mind, I designed a bounty calculator to streamline and support the budgeting process for the Witcher.

Design assumptions: As I mentioned, the life of a Witcher is fast-paced and dangerous. For this first version of the calculator, I assumed it was crucial to make it quick to configure. Therefore, I defined three main information fields: contract currency, the monster to be hunted, and items that could be used during the hunt. Each field needs to be straightforward to set, but since there are countless possible monsters and items, I opted for inputs that open specific screens for each field (see the image below). Once the monster and items are selected, a suggested reward value is displayed. For instance, a Leshen is priced at 350 orens, a higher value due to the high-risk nature of the hunt.

In the "Currency" field, I considered pre-setting it based on the hunter's geolocation while still allowing the option to edit it if needed. With all the fields filled out, the idea is that the Witcher can also share the reward estimate with a contact or potential client.

I also considered it essential to ensure that the interaction patterns were simple and intuitive, with visual consistency that allows the components to be easily integrated and replicated across other parts of the fictional app. I plan to add more screens, such as the currency selection, and include a video showcasing the user flow.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that, in the books and games, a hunt can often become much more complex than it initially seems. Therefore, the calculator serves as a base or suggestion for the reward, but ultimately, it’s up to the Witcher to determine the best way to price a hunt.
