About Nigori Sake
Nigori Sake: Unfiltered and Creamy
Nigori sake is a traditional Japanese sake known for its cloudy, unfiltered appearance and rich, creamy texture. Unlike most sake, which is filtered to remove rice solids, Nigori retains some of the rice particles, giving it a milky or opaque look. This style of sake is typically sweeter and fuller-bodied than clear sake, with flavors that often include tropical fruits, coconut, vanilla, and a hint of nuttiness.
Nigori sake typically has an alcohol content of 12–16% and is enjoyed slightly chilled. Its bold flavor and smooth texture make it a versatile pairing with spicy foods, desserts, or even as a dessert itself. The unfiltered nature of Nigori sake symbolizes a rustic, more traditional take on sake brewing, offering a unique sensory experience that is both rich and approachable.
About The Design
The design of the Koko Suruga sake label is a visually striking homage to traditional Japanese art and the cultural heritage tied to the Suruga Bay region. Featuring an Ukiyo-e-inspired illustration, the label showcases a dynamic wave cresting toward the serene Mount Fuji in the background, evoking the iconic imagery of Hokusai’s famous works. The bold reds and deep blues, complemented by a soft gradient, create a harmonious blend of energy and tranquility, much like the balanced experience of sipping sake.
The name Koko Suruga reflects this connection. Koko means “here” in Japanese, grounding the sake in its cultural and geographical roots, while Suruga refers to the historic province and its picturesque bay, renowned for its natural beauty and significance in Japanese history. Together, the name and design encapsulate a sense of place and tradition, celebrating the sake’s origins while inviting the drinker to immerse themselves in the artistry and elegance of Japanese brewing.
