BURP. BRANDING
BURP. Fermentation
BURP. approached me to create a comprehensive brand identity for their fermentation education business. Founder Romy wanted an approachable, modern take on traditional fermentation practices through engaging workshops.
THE CHALLENGE
Create a brand that feels fun and accessible whilst maintaining educational authority. The fermentation space is often seen as intimidating or boring and even, sometimes, overly scientific.
DISCOVERY PHASE
Kicked off with an in-depth consultation covering business vision, target audience, competition and future plans. Key insight: we needed the brand to feel vibrant and welcoming whilst maintaining professionalism.
DESIGN PROCESS
Mood Board Development
Created three distinct directions
1.Traditional craft, playful but nostalgic
2.Bold, bubbly educational, but playful
3.Clean, modern, art deco vintage.
Romy loved direction 2 - perfect for demystifying fermentation.
Logo Concepts
Three concepts were presented
1. Bubbling jar icon with playful typography
2. Bold illustrated objects inspired by protest posters
3. Sharper jar with serif font - more “grown up”
The 1. Bubbling jar won out and was spot on for the brand’s personality.
Final Brand Identity
Features a distinctive bubbling jar logo, vibrant palette inspired by fermented foods, modern typography and a playful voice. Applied across social media, workshops, packaging and marketing materials.
Brand Application
The identity was implemented across
Social media templates
Workshop materials
Packaging and merchandise
Digital platforms
Marketing collateral
Results
The brand has helped BURP. establish a strong presence in Bristol’s food scene, attracting new workshop participants and setting up brilliantly for future growth. Successfully balances being educational yet approachable - exactly what we set out to achieve.
