Fourth App Redesign

The Fourth app is widely used for managing employee schedules, but as a regular user, I noticed several usability issues that impacted efficiency and clarity. To address these concerns, I undertook a redesign of the app’s core functionality, focusing on improving the "My Schedule" page while retaining the original design framework. My goal was to build upon the existing structure, enhancing its features and usability without starting from scratch.

Identified Issues:

Lack of direct communication with managers:

·      There was no built-in way to contact the manager directly about shifts.

Difficulty differentiating shifts:

·      All shifts were grouped together without clear distinctions.

·       It was challenging to identify confirmed shifts versus pending ones.

·      There was no option to cancel a shift.

Limited shift details:

·      Information about shifts, such as breaks, colleagues, and managers, was not readily available.

Redesign Objectives:

Retain the existing design:

·      Instead of starting from scratch, I opted to update the original design to maintain user familiarity.

·      This approach allowed me to build upon the app while challenging myself to work with an existing framework, which I had not done before.

Enhance functionality:

·      My aim was to add progressive features that addressed the app’s shortcomings and improved the overall user experience.

Key Updates:

Improved Schedule Clarity:

·       Added a full calendar view to make the schedule visually intuitive.

·       Introduced colour coordination to differentiate shifts:

o   Green for confirmed shifts.

o   Orange for pending approval.

·       Included icons to provide additional context, such as completed shifts.

Individual Shift Containers:

·       Grouped shift details into separate containers, making each shift easier to read and interact with.

Enhanced Communication Features:

·       While the app lacked an integrated messaging system, I added direct email links for shifts.

o   This allows users to quickly contact managers about specific shifts.

Detailed Shift Information:

·       Integrated links to the rota, providing essential details such as:

o   Break times.

o   Other staff members working during the shift.

o   Managers available on the day.

Status Indication:

·       Introduced colour-coded statuses on each shift to visually indicate progress:

o   Confirmed

o   Completed

o   Pending

Tabbed Navigation for Shifts:

·       Created additional tabs to clearly separate shifts by type:

o   My Shifts: Confirmed upcoming shifts.

o   Open Shifts: Available upcoming shifts.

o   Pending: Shifts awaiting approval.

o   Completed: History of completed shifts.

The redesign of the Fourth app focused on addressing real user pain points, improving clarity, and enhancing functionality. By working with the existing design, I retained user familiarity while introducing thoughtful updates to make the app more efficient and user-friendly. This project not only resolved practical issues but also allowed me to develop skills in updating and enhancing an established design framework.
