Sunlife Mobile App - Go Term Life

Overview

Being a long time partner with Sunlife, IBM was approached to work on a mobile app offering a quick and easy registration to sign-up for a "Go Term Life Insurance". The initial specification was that it needed to be simple, engaging and easy to scroll through all the questions asked to open the account. All the data would then be collected and saved on the main server to create an account for the user.

About the Project

An IBM team dedicated solely to working on Sunlife client projects was experiencing some issues because they didn't have any UI/UX resources to help bring the Project to life. They made the request to the head of design at IBM to have a UI/UX designer onboard. I was selected and transferred to help the team. I hit the road, joining the team and assimilating the scope of the project, the team specialization and skills, the request by the client, the deadline etc. Having all these information and specs at hand helped me to plan the journey and delivery of wireframes and prototypes, to relay with the development team and provide non-stop UI/UX support until the final project was delivered.

Wireframing and Prototyping Process

Research and Iteration Process

I use the same repeated process with each clients, first initiating research on the company, gathering info, background and history of the company. then comes branding, this include Typography used, Color palettes, Iconography, illustration and Photographic Styles. All these helps to carry the branding of the company on different digital platforms. The iteration process starts after all these data are gathered and low fidelity wireframe are produced to communicate the initial idea to the team. As we progress in the right direction and we all have a vision of what the final product would be, the low-fidelity wireframe, changes to high-fidelity over many iterations to show consistency through the screens, visual components and interactions to be built, functionalities to be added and its also ready to be sent for review to the client.

The top bar acts as a "Breadcrumb" functionality, the user know just by looking at it where he is in the whole process at anytime.

The initial question type was submitted by Sunlife but we had content writers to review and re-write the questions in a more user-friendly way. Easy to digest and assimilate.

Design Highlights

I use progressive disclosures as a method to gather info about the client. This is mainly translated as simple yet engaging short questionnaire, some with yes/no buttons and others with quick select options. I planned to put some illustrations animated in lottie but because of time restraint, this idea was dropped and we kept only a few illustration here and there.

Final Results

Base d on feedback received, the app was very well received by Sunlife customers and boosted its revenue by having many customers sign-up in the first week the app was released.
