Green Gables/Edgewood Eichler Homes communities - custom artwork
The Green Gables community was one of Joseph Eichler’s first to feature plans from his longtime architectural design partner, Anshen + Allen. Most of the original “classic” Eichlers built in 1950 are still well intact, despite being considerably smaller than future models. This tract was considered so revolutionary at the time, it was named “Subdivision of the Year” by Architectural Form, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005.
A few years later, the neighborhood of Edgewood was built right next to Green Gables. There’s so much overlap, I decided to put them both on the same map. This development of about 80 homes was completed in 1956.
But probably the most standout part of these developments is the Eichler planned and built Edgewood Shopping Center, completed in 1957. While much of it was unfortunately renovated and rebuilt about 10 years ago when the buildings fell into disrepair, some of the original features remain. And there’s no doubt it holds a lot of historical significance in the story of these unique homes. Especially given that it was the headquarters of Eichler Homes for quite some time.
If you live in these neighborhoods or would like a unique gift for someone who does, consider one of my MOD-icons, MCM Neighborhood Maps, or Historic Home Plaques. They’re all very customizable and affordable. Send me a message or email (info@foxface.design) to get started.
