The Challenge
Designing a cohesive digital and visual identity for the Lagos Slush’D event was a challenge due to the need to blend Slush’s globally recognized branding with the unique entrepreneurial spirit of Nigeria. The website, logo, and branding needed to resonate with both an international audience and the local startup ecosystem while clearly communicating the event’s mission and ensuring accessibility for diverse stakeholders.
This required:
Aligning the logo and website with Slush’s global branding guidelines, including adherence to their fonts, spacing, and visual hierarchy.
Meeting Slush Global’s approval to officially host a Slush’D event in Nigeria.
The Approach
To address the challenges, I adopted a research-driven and collaborative approach, ensuring alignment with both Slush’s global standards and the unique needs of the Lagos Slush’D event.
Brand Analysis: I began by analyzing Slush’s global branding guidelines to understand their visual identity, including typography, color schemes, spacing, and tone of voice. This ensured that the designs would be consistent with their established global brand.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Regular consultations with the Slush Global Team were conducted to clarify approval requirements and gather feedback during the design process.
Audience Research: I studied the African startup ecosystem, focusing on what resonates with Nigerian founders and investors to incorporate elements of local relevance without deviating from Slush’s global image.
Competitor Benchmarking: I researched other successful Slush’D events, analyzing their websites, logo marks, use of typefaces, and tone of voice. This provided inspiration and a clearer understanding of how to maintain consistency across the Slush’D sub-brand while creating a unique identity for the Lagos event.
Accessibility First: Ensuring the website was user-friendly and accessible to a diverse audience was a priority. I optimized it for both mobile and desktop experiences, mindful of varying internet speeds and devices in Nigeria’s tech landscape.
By integrating these insights, I created design concepts that bridged Slush’s Nordic identity with Nigeria’s entrepreneurial dynamism, all while ensuring a seamless approval process with Slush Global.
Solution
To craft a distinct and impactful digital and visual identity for Lagos Slush’D, I implemented solutions that seamlessly merged Slush’s global standards with Nigeria’s entrepreneurial spirit:
Logo Design: I created a dynamic logo inspired by Slush’s iconic bold typography while adding subtle design elements reflecting Nigerian culture, such as patterns inspired by local textiles. This ensured it resonated with the local audience while aligning with Slush’s branding.
Branding Elements: A vibrant and modern color palette was selected to convey the energy of Nigeria’s startup scene. Visuals and iconography were designed to highlight resilience, collaboration, and innovation, drawing inspiration from both Nordic minimalism and African creativity.
Website Design: The website was designed to be sleek, intuitive, and highly functional, featuring:
Optimized layouts for mobile and desktop to ensure accessibility.
Clear navigation for ticket sales, speaker details, and event updates.
Bold typography and dynamic visuals to evoke Slush’s signature aesthetic.
