A series of illustrations and quotes from black activist leaders during the protests of May 2020, in support of the cause.

Client

Volunteer work for the Los Angeles Black Lives Matter movement. Because this grassroots movement was widespread and organic, there was no established brand or guidelines.

Project

Social media graphics to provide context to BLM within the larger historical context of American race relations and the fight for civil rights. An important thing this campaign wanted to highlight was the ongoing nature of this struggle, that it was part of a larger conversation around race people have been trying to encourage for decades.

Design

I wanted to use the words and faces of important figures in this movement throughout history, while creating a consistent, timeless look across all graphics. I chose a graffiti style look for the portraits, reminiscent of 60s protest art popular during the conception of the Black Panther party. In contrast, the handwritten font for each quote evokes a sense of authority and truth.
