Freddy's Sweet Nightmare Pills (pixel game for Figma)
I’m participating in Dribbble’s October Warm-Ups challenge, where Freddy Krueger needs help with the branding of his new line of sleeping pills.
As I’m not a branding designer but a UX designer, I decided to focus on interface design. Here’s how I approached the challenge: I created a pixel game in Figma. The entire game is fully playable within Figma. Link at the end of the presentation. Let me walk you through the stages of creation.
First, for the concept, I drew inspiration from 8-bit games and 90s classics like Mario that we all loved and played. I started by creating a mood board in Figma Jam, where I gathered character ideas, thought through how the character would move, and designed the scene’s flow. I also brainstormed the name for the pills, and they’re called Sweet Nightmare—a bit of a controversial name, right? I wanted to add some fun details, especially for fans of the Freddy Krueger films.
Next, I moved on to developing the background. I wanted the game to have more depth, not just an old-school look but something visually engaging. As I mentioned earlier, I also wanted to add fun details for fans of the Freddy Krueger films. The background is full of Easter eggs related to the first movie, and I’m curious if you’ll be able to find them all.If you do, drop a comment with what you’ve found! I might even gift one of my UI kits to someone who discovers all the hidden Easter eggs. What do you think of that idea?
Then I focused on designing the scene, aiming for something that would move fluidly but still be simple and fun. Of course, I also worked on the character. I wanted him to stay true to pixel art, but at the same time, I wanted to make him a bit cute, since this is a humorous challenge, not pure horror.
Even though I love horror, I decided to keep it light-hearted for this project. The final version of Freddy turned out to be quite charming, don’t you think?
To wrap it all up, the whole project took me around three working days. It was quite challenging, especially drawing every detail pixel by pixel and making sure the character movements were smooth and accurate. The entire game was built solely in Figma using its animation tools.
The game is uploaded to Figma Community, and you can try out the simulation yourself! Overall, I had a great time working on this. I’m a huge fan of thrillers, horror, and everything spooky, so this was definitely a passion project for me.
I hope you enjoyed the concept as much as I did.A big thanks to everyone for checking it out and to Dribbble for this fun challenge!
