Everlance iOS Live Activity
Designing Apple's Live Activity for Everlance, a mileage tracking app
People use Everlance to track their miles so that they can get reimbursed by their company for driving. For drivers, every mile translates to real dollars and cents in their pocket. I designed a "Trip in progress" feature using Apple's Live Activity component to inform users when Everlance has started tracking their trip. This visibility reassures drivers that Everlance is capturing their mileage and they don't have to worry.
There are a number of examples of Live Activity from other common mobile apps like Uber, Instacart - even Instagram has uses a live activity component when you exit the app with a video still upload to your stories.
After looking at several of these examples, reviewing the documentation from Apple I put together a few low fidelity mock ups. I worked with the engineering team as they built an early prototype of the live activity so that we could test it in the real world, driving, to see if it would accomplish our desired goals. After a few rounds of testing with the prototype, we made a few important design changes and landed on this version as the final design. Want to hear more? email me at jennamchen@gmail.com
