'Backpack' - Inktober 10/1

Notes on the design

Inktober 10/1 - "Backpack"

Once again I'm trying to take on the @jakeparker Inktober Challenge, 31 days of drawing prompts to be done exclusively with pen & ink.

I first sketched this with 4H pencil and inked over with Micron pens on craft paper, then scanned and digitized in Procreate.

I've attempted this on and off over the years since it started in 2009, but have never been able to complete and I've never posted it publicly. I likely won't hit every prompt this year either but love the motivation, going for at least 10 finished pieces for the month.

This first drawing is a simple line art illustration done in a flat lay style with minimal dimension. I did some brief Google skimming of backpack styles but mostly went on visual memory so the realism would be semi-accurate and loose.

My boys popped in while I was finishing this and asked if I'm going to add color, so I'm working on a v2 with color and texture which should be kind of cool.

The story behind the piece

Once I started thinking about backpacks, I brainstormed about all kinds of things we carry and their different uses, styles, and functions. This led to the idea for a backpack collage!

It was fun to work on the layout and fitting these together in a loose pattern by their sizes and shapes.
