What are scenarios?

Scenarios are tools for helping us plan the future - or rather for different futures, they help us focus on critical uncertainties, on the things we don't know about which might transform our business. They help us understand the limitations of our mental maps of the world - to think the unthinkable, anticipate the unknowable and utilise both to make better strategic decisions.

I worked with Shell on three generations of their scenarios between 2001-2010. Then with the World Economic Forum between 2014-2017. In both cases my job was to visualise diverse and sometimes abstract information. Alan Fletcher had always supported my work and these appointments were due largely due to him, for which I am eternally grateful.
