Athanatos (immortal)

A Short Story..

In the forgotten age of gods and men, there was a celestial being named Athanatos, a guardian of the realm between life and death. Tasked with watching over mortal souls, Athanatos was blessed with immortality—a gift that soon became his curse.

For centuries, he witnessed the lives of men bloom and fade, watched as they fell in love, built empires, and inevitably surrendered to death. Yet, Athanatos could not follow them. Bound by the gods' decree, he was condemned to observe but never experience the release of death himself.

As time wore on, his radiant wings began to wilt, feathers heavy with the weight of endless centuries. The glow of life he had once embodied dimmed, his eternal form caught between divine beauty and a grotesque decay. He began to crave the end that was never meant for him—a longing to feel the same peace he saw in those whose lives slipped away.

In his despair, Athanatos clawed at his chest, tearing at his celestial form, trying to bleed away the endless suffering. But even as the blood flowed, his life force remained untouched, an eternal prisoner in a body that could never die. The gods had forgotten him, leaving him to wander in the space between realms, yearning for an end that would never come.

And so, Athanatos remains, a tragic figure trapped in his immortal agony, neither alive nor dead, forever bound to witness the fleeting beauty of life from which he is eternally separated.

His name, once a symbol of divine power, is now whispered as a curse—a reminder that even immortality can become a fate worse than death.
