Where's Waldo Meets Joseon: A Cultural Crossover
This illustration is the result of a creative experiment at Hongik University, conducted in partnership with Universal Studio Korea in 2022. Students were tasked with selecting and reinterpreting any IP from Universal's portfolio. For this project, Inès Gruhier, now the founder of Odubu Design, chose to work with the Where's Waldo franchise, reimagining it within the context of traditional Korean art.
Inès Gruhier created a unique cultural mashup by integrating Where's Waldo-inspired characters into a scene based on Kim Hong-do (김홍도)’s famous painting, "Feast at Yeongyangjeong Pavilion” (연광정연회도 (練光亭宴會圖)). The illustration features Waldo-esque figures dressed in traditional Korean attire, hidden within the intricate landscape of a Joseon Dynasty scene.
The result is a blend of Eastern and Western artistic styles, celebrating Korean cultural heritage with a contemporary twist.
