Alter Mundi
“Alter Mundi” is an art exhibition and retrospective on the work of Mexican artist Adriana Chávez that took place at Unarte(Art and Design University) in Puebla, Mexico.
This exhibition was curated in collaboration with Dr. Adeola Enigbokan, she was responsible for text and translation (english to spanish) while I was in charge of the design and installation.
While doing the curatorial work we noticed that the art made by this artist is mainly based on the observation and experimentation with different materials, which brought us to choose the name “Alter Mundi” previously used by the artist in one of her productions. This name reflected the different worlds created by the same hands in the different stages of her career as an artist, a transition and evolution of her work.
The main inspiration for the design of the exhibition was this women oriented tv show from the 90’s called “Cable Club” where the artist used to present a 7 min capsule teaching decorative painting techniques, where there was always a yellow cloth in the table, which became the main color of the exhibition materials. For this we made an interactive installation that resembled what could be the table of the show or a kitchen table, inviting people to sit there and paint flowers in 7 minutes with a guide sheet that described how to do it in three steps.
Another important aspect of this exhibition is the fact of how little appreciation and respect this kind of work made by women in their kitchen tables or studios, gets in the art scene of Mexico. Inside the exhibition we created a shop that had smaller affordable pieces so anyone could get an original piece and support the artist.
