The value of reading
Reading is more important for children's development than their social background*. Teenagers who read books for pleasure outside of schools are more likely to achieve personal and professional success later in life. Reading boosts your brainpower** and increases your ability to empathize. If reading is so beneficial then why do school kids often avoid it?
Having in mind reading is a key for modern education, EDICO Foundation decided to roll out a new required reading list project. The Alternative Reading List (ALL) was launched to make access to interesting titles of modern authors much easier. The goal was to present literature related to kids and teenagers’ reality nowadays.
We were asked to create a visual identity for The Alternative Reading List. It's supposed to encourage and spread passion for reading. Eye-catching and attractive to all type of users: kids, teenagers, parents and teachers.
We designed a visual identity driven by showing reading as a game for the mind and a trigger for the imagination. Engagement of reading activity is expressed through bold geometrical illustrations and vibrant, attention-grabbing colours. A set of graphic shapes reference bookshelves and is endlessly flexible. Graphic system lets creating new backgrounds or illustration style easily.
Goal for a website was to design it as a digital catalogue of book reviews and source of knowledge for schoolchildren, parents and teachers. Main feature was a navigation panel with browsing option based on age groups, themes and literary genres. Our challenge was to create search and browsing path intuitive, simplify and effective.
