Exploring Custom Avatar Illustration Styles

Behind the scenes work of custom avatars of creators for digital publication, Lens.

After multiple rounds of exploration with Rogue Studio, we finally landed on this final illustration style inspired by nostalgic comic cartoons in the Sunday paper for the color, texture, playfulness, and most importantly—storytelling—it adds to the overall visual identity.

After nailing down the style, we asked the client to share a short list of hobbies and interests of each of their creators so that we could bring them into their custom avatars. The hand-drawn lines and the ben-day dots add texture and playfulness, while the portraits interacting with a personal item reveal their otherwise hidden joys in life.

About the client

Lens is a publication exploring the lives of creators, their creative process, and the often unseen and unheard individuals who work "behind the lens" to empower them. Lens' creators are sharing stories that inspire, inform, and entertain their readers about the ever-evolving creator economy.
