Yummi™: Your Own Beer & Food Pairing Guide

Yummi™ is a tasty Hybrid Mobile App High-Fidelity Prototype designed not only for BeerGeeks and Foodies, but also for everybody who enjoys fancy or minimalistic user interface.

Interviews

At BeerWeek Con in May 2022, I conducted interviews focused on beer-food pairing. The feedback revealed that most people are interested in beer/food pairing, especially in restaurants and guest parties, where they want to impress others. This insight led to the addition of features like checking how food and beer in your fridge pair together.

Target Group

While the primary target group consists of Beergeeks, Yummi™ also caters to those less familiar with craft beer. I added extra information about beer species and pairing justifications in the food cards. Registered users can also save their favorite dishes and beer styles.

Persona

Tomasz Szamot, a full-stack software developer in his mid-30s, lives in a highly populated city. He enjoys high-end food and craft beer, often dining out. Tomasz aims to expand his knowledge of craft alcohol and impress his peers.

Live Tests

I conducted 7 testing sessions using a mobile wireframe on Adobe XD. Key improvements included:

  • Revised main screen interface with colorful tiles and descriptions

  • New features like "BeerPedia" and "FoodPedia"

  • Dark mode and Google/Facebook login

  • Improved filter options, including allergens and meal types

Second Iteration of Tests

After addressing initial feedback, a second round of usability tests in early 2023 led to further enhancements, such as:

  • Tap-triggered hints for beer card shortcuts

  • Maintaining the Menu bar at the bottom for ease of use

  • Consistent home screen tiles with balanced descriptions and visuals

Name

Initially called LoveCraft, the app was renamed Yummi™ to better balance the focus between beer and food, avoiding unintended associations with horror fiction.

Logo

Yummi™’s logo evolved from various concepts, ultimately settling on a minimalist design featuring a capital "Y" resembling a bottle opener.

Color Palette

The branding colors—golden-yellow, juicy pink, and muted green—were chosen to evoke fresh food and cold beer, aiming to appeal much like a good restaurant’s advertisement.

Font

Manrope, a minimalist, non-serif font, was selected for its elegance and playful letter blending, aligning with the app’s bright and whimsical design.

Components

Yummi™ blends minimalist design with vibrant colors and handmade drawings, focusing on professionalism, ease of use, and visual appeal, adhering to the Atomic Design concept.

Future

Feedback from interviews and tests suggested expanding Yummi™ to include wines and distillates, adding global regions, and even recognizing beer via QR codes. The potential for Yummi™’s evolution is vast. Time to get some beer.
