Cloud coverage concept in Google Maps
A few weeks ago, I was on holiday on a Spanish island, hoping for sunny weather. Unfortunately, it was cloudier than expected, though not uniformly across the island. Each morning, we found ourselves guessing which beaches would have the best weather, based on a makeshift observation of cloud patterns, thickness, color, and movement. More often than not, our guesses were off. We frequently overheard other tourists saying "this morning, the north side was calm and sunny," while the south was cloudy and windy, and vice versa.
This got me thinking: what if there were a way to check cloud coverage in your area and get a short-term forecast? While both Apple Maps and Google Maps offer similar features, they focus on precipitation and don't provide much help when no rain is expected.
After quickly mocking up a concept, I still believe there's value in this feature, but I also see plenty of room for improvement in how it could be both visualized and interacted with. Do you think this is just a niche use case? If not, what would you add, remove, or change to make it truly useful?
