HeatCheck — Numerical Data

HeatCheck’s temperature information is different. We know it is hot outside, based on the temperature reading. But is it safe to be outside?

Numerical data is one type of data, and it does tell you something about your surroundings. But you do need some kind of numerical literacy to be able to know what "35ºC" feels like. For someone in the heat, wishing for a quick readout, this might not be an ideal case.

We envision here a crowdsourced, subjective, and localized heat data that's easily readable and actionable. Is it too hot to be outside in a current spatial environment, in this particular moment? We used the hyper-local Google Plus codes to localize crowdsourced data up to a few square meters.

This allows the user to quickly gauge whether they’re safe or not outside. In this example, “Excessive Heat” means that one should seek shelter immediately. The button to Find a Shelter is immediately apparent when the temperature outside is hard to survive in.
