23/32 – Portland Huskies
Stumptown Dogs
The 23rd team for this project is the Portland Huskies who play in the Northern Division of the West Conference.
The Huskies have always been an eye for talent but never a source for developing it. More often than not Portland is drafting in the upper half of the first round but unfortunately hasn't been able to build around their investments and, as a result, hasn't experience much on-field success. Last season, the Huskies cracked 7 wins for the first time since Season 19 – this time behind the leadership of their first-year starting quarterback who was the 8th overall pick in the draft prior.
Visual Direction
The Portland Huskies, whose team name is absent of any clear relationship with the city, are one of the original franchises in this fictional football league. The Huskies sport a seldom used but particularly unique color scheme of violet and orange that is reminiscent of a Portland sunrise and unlike any of the traditional Pacific Northwest color schemes.
Despite the lack of correlation, the team name "Huskies" makes for a great football mascot. Siberian huskies (this breed in particular is depicted in the primary logo) are famous for being sled dogs racing under harsh conditions. Interpreting this idea in a football universe, a "sled dog" can be a force to be reckoned with on the football sled, or a stout offensive or defensive line.
Execution
Portland's primary logo is the aforementioned Siberian husky depiction in violet and white. The tuft of fur on the back of the husky's neck and the iris of its eye are both orange. The entire mark, uniform across all logos in this identity, is outlined in white.
In the secondary spot is a reimagining of the famous White Stag sign, still trimmed in orange but this time featuring a brush script style "Huskies" wordmark across it. The linkage in the second "s" terminates in to a husky's tail. A star is dropped in the same relative position as Portland on the state map.
The Huskies have an "H" partial mark that is pulled from the brush script wordmark above with the tail laid serving as a crossbar for the letter. The same orange tufts from the primary logo are used to emphasize the highlights of the tail.
An additional block "P" logo is used in the context of merchandising. It's pulled from the "Portland" wordmark described below.
In addition to the script "Huskies" wordmark from the secondary logo that is also used independently throughout the identity, Portland also implements a wide slab serif block letterset that leans in to the old school gridiron aura that makes up the team name. Both "Portland" and "Huskies" versions are built from this style.
The Huskies' jersey number set is a lightly-modified classic athletic block that is slightly slimmer with less prominent chiseled corners.
Tough Sledding
The Portland Huskies and their arduous journey to the top of the mountain now have a rejuvenated identity brought to life through a versatile graphic library, equipping the team with everything but on-field play in their push for a playoff run.
