ASCII art, a form of digital art using characters from the ASCII standard, has a rich history that dates back to the early days of computing and teleprinter communications in the 1960s. Initially, ASCII art emerged from typewriter art, where artists used overstriking to create simple images. As mainframe and minicomputer systems became more prevalent in the 1970s, programmers began experimenting with creating images and animations using the limited character sets available on early computer terminals.
