Mystery Project 72

Playing around with stipple shading in Illustrator. We're so used to using dither dots in photoshop, but we're trying to create a fully expandable vector illustration in this style. Unfortunately it really slows down the application, with the brush technique we're using. Does anyone have any tips on how to achieve this style in vector, without slowing down the program?
