Die Zeit

Editorial illustration for the German newspaper "Die Zeit" who produce a monthly kids magazine, Die Zeit Leo. This was all about the Pinkerton detective agency and the birth of modern detectives.

The story takes us through the capturing of the notorious Reno brothers gang. Creating a sting operation that involved building a fake bar with a Pinkerton agent standing in as bartender.

The bartender befriended the Reno gang over a number of months, even showing them a new toy of his, "the camera"! Using this new technology, detectives and the police were able to identify criminals like never before.

The head of the gang was finally lured to a local train station and captured by a team of Pinkerton's. The Pinkerton logo was (and still is) an eye. This is where we get the phrase (to hire a) "private eye". Many aspects of modern investigations were invented by the Pinkerton agency.

A really enjoyable job, many thanks to die Zeit.
