Stories of the Formerly Enslaved

We often forget that what we think of as history is also someone else's lived experience. Grand movments, sweeping changes, and major events paint our idea of history in a way that the people living in that time would have never imagined.

The horrors of chattle slavery in the US are well documented but the voices of those who experienced the horror first hand are often unheard.

Between 1936 and 1938, the WPA interviewed more than 2000 formerly enslaved Americans as part of a New Deal project. Those interviews are collected by the US Library of Congress and provide a unique, and somewhat troubled, look into America's worst institution.

In an online world, bringing the museum to your device can be a powerful tool in expanding knowledge and access to information. Explore my page for yourself and visit the US Library of Congress for the full collection.
