Quad Tree cursor tiles in After effects
I was really impressed and inspired by Jerry Liu (@SloppyJ44) who posted a really cool fully interactive quad tree effect achieved with Rive app on his Twitter feed: https://x.com/SloppyJ44/status/1807503554837672160
So I immediatly tried to recreate it in After Effects (with a pre-animated Cursor image because of course, we don't have any real interactivity in After Effects). It is a much simplified version of it (less tiles and only 1 subdivision iteration) but I love the result anyway so this is why I share it :)
For those who are interested in the technic:
Just created 2 different precomps ; one 4x4 tiles arranged in a grid and one with 8x8 tiles also arranged in a perfect grid ;
both use the same tile that is a precomposition with animated design inside (the designs come from my MoglyphFX toolset by the way) ; and they are all timeremapped with an expression that translates the Cursor layer's motion as the frames to select in the timeremap).
I simply masked the 4x4 grid precomposition in a master comp with random squares of the same size than the biggest tiles, and with the 8x8 grid tiles visible below and...voilà :)
