Serene: Hospital Gown set
In response to a the request by NHS Edinburgh Children's Hospital to improve hospital gowns for children, I drew from my recent experience as a young patient to propose a redesign focused on enhancing dignity and comfort. Identifying key issues such as inadequate coverage and unattractive designs, I integrated trousers with the traditional gown, documented the process in a digital sketchbook, and used my 3D design skills to create detailed models. The redesigned gown features soft, hypoallergenic, breathable, and antimicrobial materials, child-friendly colours and patterns, and adjustable fastenings like Velcro and snaps. It ensures dignity with a fully closed back and integrated trousers, incorporates familiar and soothing designs for psychological comfort, and includes sensory-friendly features for children with additional needs. I created guidance materials for parents and provided staff training on the new designs, starting with pilot programs in specific wards and developing a scalable plan for NHS-wide implementation. Through user testing, I iterated on the design to meet user needs, combining creative design thinking with practical considerations to create a solution addressing both functional and emotional requirements.
