Daily UI #7 - Settings

I started using Figma about a year ago now, and one of the interesting learnings has been the extent to which you’re forced to confront everything that you take for granted with technology. If you want to design something new, you have to break down the problem into parts so small that they’re practically unrecognisable.

It’s a bit like explaining the grammatical rules of your native language. Given enough time, you can probably do it, but it’s so deep in your brain that it feels alien to operate low-level when you’ve been zoomed out for so long.

Designing this settings page was no different. I knew I wanted a dark/light mode switch but hadn’t considered other critical elements across spacing, category iconography, what dropdown arrows actually look like, and much, much more. It's always a challenge but never a dull one.

Over time, I imagine this will become more of an automatic response but for now I'm enjoying how much thought has to go into each release.
