18/32 – Motor City Mustangs

Full Throttle

Up next – the Motor City Mustangs, team number 18 for the project. The Mustangs play in the Great Lakes Division in the East Conference.

The Mustangs have been known for their high-horsepower offense, led by an OPOTY-winning quarterback and a deep receiver core. Despite this, they've only been able to capture two division titles in the past five seasons. Each of these division wins were followed by a deflating 5-11 season, leaving uncertainty towards the overall identity of the team.

Visual Direction

The Motor City Mustangs' visual identity is built upon Detroit's foundation as the automotive capital of the world. In the early 20th century, the area saw massive growth and innovation at the hands of many pioneers, one of which would go on to establish Ford Motor Company – one of the largest automakers in the world.

The nickname "Mustangs" is openly named after the Ford Mustang, a distinctly recognizable sports car and Ford's longest-produced nameplate. Outside of the automotive reference, a mustang is a muscular wild horse horse that symbolizes freedom and adventure.

Execution

Motor City's visual identity is potent with automotive references and it starts at the primary logo: a chrome retro-futuristic depiction of a mustang as a hood ornament. The robotic styling and vague features create a mystical appearance that is carried throughout the rest of the identity.

If the primary is a hood ornament, the secondary is a quarter-panel badge that has typically been used to denote engine size and power output. A "MC" monogram and nested football shape has been created in light of this inspiration in the same chrome execution.

In the tertiary spot is a small "MC" piston badge that is used sparingly on merchandise and in other aspects of the graphic suite.

For the typography, Motor City leans in to two unique paths: a retro rear-quarter script for the team name and location wordmarks (both with the same chrome styling as the rest of the logo suite) and a jersey number font inspired by the Ford Mustang speedometer.

All Gas, No Brakes

The Motor City Mustangs are buckled in and ready to rip with a gassed up visual identity that proudly honors the city it represents through a robust graphic suite.
