Carlyle Portrait

Carlyle is the lens through which we encounter the creatures in Creature Codex (a series of creature designs of mine) through.

My intention was to design a character that blended the Spanish Conquistador explorer with an English hunter, pith helmet and all.

I built some vertical symmetry into the helmet and head, so that the Fleur de Lis on his helmet was reflected in the shapes of his nose and mustache. Because the conceit I’m establishing with Creature Codex is that Carlyle is a real life relative of mine from over 100 years ago, I rendered a portrait of him as though it was a found vintage photograph.
