Why?
πββοΈ "Why?" is my favorite question! However, many people donβt like it at all - they find it confrontational, doubting their skills, knowledge, or decisions, and often it results in them seeing red when you throw it at them.
π§° Despite this, itβs an important asset in my toolbelt, both in my work as a designer, and in life. And when its power is revealed and the results are clear, I only encounter gratitude.
For those who still doubt its power, Iβve put together 10 reasons why "Why?" is important π:
π "Why?" is the curiosity to explore the world around you (yes, the childlike wonder that adults have long lost);
π "Why?" holds the secrets of the universe, and the answer is somewhere out there (sometimes behind another door labeled "How?");
π "Why?" is what moves people - the series of decisions that lead them on their path;
π "Why?" focuses your energy with intent and purpose (without wasting it on nonsense);
π "Why?" drives businesses and enterprises - βWhy does my customer buy?β, βWhy do they choose this store over that one?β, βWhy canβt they find my website?β and many more (I could write questions all day and still wonβt finish this list);
But "Why?β also has a dark side:
π "Why?" is uncomfortable - how dare you question someone's worldview and beliefs, βthis is how itβs doneβ (but this says more about them than about you);
π "Why?" is unpleasant, and if you want to piss someone off, this is a sure-fire way to do it;
π "Why?" reveals secrets you may not be ready to learn;
But also:
π "Why?" is caring for your loved ones;
π "Why?" is the pain in your eyes when you get hurt or when fate plays a dirty trick on you;
π "Why?" is the reason you keep going when every cell in your body screams to stop;
The ability to question the established order is the power to change (and improve) it - your country, your city, your neighborhood, or your street. The most important change, however, is internal, and it starts with one little annoying question. π
