16/32 – Houston Herd

Ride On

Enter the Houston Herd, team number 16 and the final team in the Southwest Division for #theUFLProject!

Despite being a consistent middle-of-the-pack team, Houston has climbed the ranks in the later 20s seasons with a few strong campaigns and a playoff appearance. In Season 26, the Herd clinched a division title and advanced to the West Conference Championship where they fell to Denver, the eventual champions. Houston looks to continue their good fortune and make a push towards a championship run.

Visual Direction

Previously the "Longhorns", the Houston Herd doubled down for H-Town and opted for a more alliterative name this time around.

Since the 1950s, the world's largest and longest-running livestock show and rodeo has been held in Houston, TX. This team features longhorn bull horn graphics on player helmets and when the team rushes to the field it simulates a herd of bulls.

Execution

The primary logo for the Herd is an angry longhorn bull in orange and black. The bull horns are a common motif used throughout the identity.

A "lasso H" monogram takes the secondary logo spot. The lasso is a cattle-catching tool used in both competitive roping events and on working ranches. The "H", of course, represents Houston.

A tertiary "horned H" logo pulls the horns from the primary bull and merges them with the "H" from the teamname wordmark to create a solid, one-color mark. This logo is used as a shorthand identifier for the Houston Herd.

As previously mentioned, Houston incorporates large bull horns on player helmets. This graphic can also be used without the context of the helmet.

The team's typography takesd inspiration from wood type poster printing and its modular, hand-carved blocks allowing for mix-and-match compositions. With a letter imbalance between the teamname and location, "Houston" demonstrates more condensed proportions and "Herd" is considerably wider and as a combination resembles these stylings. The letterforms themselves incorporate subtle spur serifs that allude to the sharp point of a bull horn.

The jersey number set is a customized, slab serif athletic block with emphasized joints and chiseled edges that relate to Western saloon-style typography.

Beware of Herd

The Houston Herd are ready to jump the chute and charge towards a championship run with a new nickname and a visual identity package that proudly represents the city of Houston.
