B2C concept for a safe smart kitchen

Project goal

Create a new mobile app concept.

  • Create a mobile app with a gamification element or similar feature that makes the user return to the app.

  • The primary purpose and functionality of the app is to control the fire guard and detect signals the fire guard and related products receive from the sensors around the kitchen.

My role and KPIs

Responsibilities and tasks:

  • Benchmarking and study screener

  • Prepare materials for workshops

  • Support the design lead in the insight workshop

  • Co-facilitate the co-creation workshop

  • Facilitate validation workshop

  • Analysis and reporting

Timeline

Insight - Problem space

Methods:

  • Benchmark

  • Study screener

  • Workshop with the client

Outcomes:

  • Business Objectives and Landscape Canvas

  • Solution framework definition

  • KPIs for the solutions

Conceptualising - Solution space

Methods:

  • Co-creation workshop

  • Wireframing

  • Concept validation workshop

  • Insight and conceptualising analysis

Outcomes:

  • The core concept vision

  • Wireframes for the MVP mobile app

  • The refined core concept, incl. the smart kitchen ecosystem

  • User journey

  • Recommendations and the roadmap

The core concept

Cookpit - Connected cooking

  • Cooking assistance

  • Safe cooking

  • Wellness in the kitchen

Technical objectives and features

  • Camera and projection technology

  • Reduce the need for a separate mobile device

  • Integrate into existing recipe databases

The core concept validation results

  • Haute cuisine cooks are more interested in learning new recipes and techniques.

  • Cooking is a social affair, a time for participants to bond and collaborate on tasks. This communal aspect necessitates the sharing of physical space.

  • Visualising is the best way for kids to show instructions phase by phase.

  • Some mentioned that their kitchen is small, and there’s no space for a device.

Somewhat disappointing results of the validation for the client

  • The Safera's Stove Guard is not the main device in the kitchen environment and cannot carry the whole concept itself.

  • The Stove Guard controls the environment's safety, which is only one feature in the whole environment.

Concept refinement

  • The kitchen triangle includes a stove, a fridge, and a tap, but most preparation work is done on a counter.

  • All the dimensions of the working area in the kitchen can have sensors connected to smart devices.

  • Smart home devices can be integrated into kitchen devices, and those integrations and functionalities can be expanded to support cooking tasks.

  • The new concept vision centres on a portable projector. Alternatively, a user can have a smart counter. With AR and AI technologies, surfaces and objects can be recognised, and instructions can be reflected.

  • In the future, the projection functionality could be integrated into the Stove Guard.
