Train Shelf

These floating shelves were a fun build. The client requested a custom train tunnel on one of the shelves to display his 1950s-era childhood model train.

The design draws inspiration from a walnut submarine, blending elements of sci-fi aesthetics reminiscent of both a Star Wars ship and a classic rocket. The train tunnel runs through both upright supports and is accented with walnut trim resembling a row of bricks, evoking the nostalgic feel of Mr. Rogers’s trolley in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. The tunnel was crafted to fit the train precisely, with just enough clearance to prevent contact with the top, ensuring smooth passage even during a fictional “hijacking.”

Each unit spans a 4-foot by 4-foot wall space, and the shelves are 8″ deep.

They fit perfectly over the custom cabinets I built
