14/32 – El Paso Desperados
Rebels of the West
The El Paso Desperados are the 14th team in this project. They're part of the Southwest Division of the West Conference.
This team has survived many iterations: the journey began in New Mexico (where they reached the Championship in Season 13), moved to San Antonio, and landed in El Paso where they've been for the past 10 seasons. During their time in West Texas, the Desperados have not experienced a losing season. This ground-and-pound team looks to make their big push towards a deep playoff run.
Visual Direction
The city of El Paso, TX has Wild West roots, known as the "Six-Shooter Capital" and "Sin City" in its early years. The small town was bustling with gunslingers and saloons until the introduction of railroads in the late 1800s, which boosted commerce and deterred lawlessness.
The team name "Desperados" honors the city's past with a name of Spanish origin. El Paso is one-half of one of the largest binational metro areas in the U.S., sharing a border with Ciudad Juárez in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Execution
The Desperados' primary logo depicts a silhouetted outlaw with a cowboy hat with a dynamic red outline. The eye of the figure is occupied by a star – this is a nod to Star on the Mountain, a large illuminated star on the Franklin Mountains that has become a landmark for El Paso.
The secondary spot is occupied by an "EP" monogram nested in a container shaped like the state of Texas. A star, pulled from the primary logo, is located on the approximate location of El Paso within the state.
A tertiary logo depicting a football in flight is illustrated with the same dynamic style as the primary logo. This mark illustrates the "Hail Mary", or a pass thrown in desperation.
El Paso also has a partial logo, which features the same "EP" monogram extracted from the secondary logo.
This team has a diverse catalog of typographic use. A weathered brush-style "Desperados" script takes the primary team name wordmark slot. This style was preserved throughout the evolution of this team. A second type style is also used, this one more modular and square. It features various curved vertical stems that nod to the dynamism of the primary logo. Both "El Paso" and "Desperados" wordmarks are derived from this style.
The jersey number set builds off of the aforementioned typographic style with more athletic block inspiration. While the letterforms are more expressive, the block-style guardrails help maintain legibility and functionality.
Long Live the 915
The El Paso Desperados have a re-energized brand identity that pays homage to the city's roots with a strengthened graphic suite, making this team feel at home for many seasons to come.
