13/32 – Phoenix Skyhawks
High Flyers
Team number 13 for #TheUFLProject is the Phoenix Skyhawks, residing in the Southwest Division of the West Conference.
The Skyhawks were one of the young Cinderella teams of the 20s seasons, reaching the playoffs for four straight (22-25) including a deep postseason run in two of them. However, after back-to-back 5-11 seasons, it's clear that their young core has aged past their prime and a light rebuild is in order.
Visual Direction
The team name "Skyhawks" is a cornucopia of sorts, inspired by an amalgamation of the phoenix and the peregrine falcon (or duck hawk).
The phoenix, the immortal creature of folklore in which the city is named after and is illustrated on its official seal, is often depicted in bright colors in association with the sun. This concept takes shape in the form of a peregrine falcon, a year-round native and, unofficially, the fastest flying bird with a known airspeed of over 200 mph while diving from the sky to attack its prey.
Execution
The primary logo for the Phoenix Skyhawks is the aforementioned bird, painted in a firey orange and gold color scheme with a midnight navy outline. The skyhawk is captured in a high-speed dive, the feathers on its neck rippled from the wind stream.
In the secondary spot is a full-bodied version of the primary, an uncropped visual of the bird soaring in the sky.
A "P" for "Phoenix" is designated as a tertiary logo, with orange and gold beams radiating around a white star just like the Arizona state flag. The second half and base of the letter is a midnight navy.
The team's typography is fast and aggressive with a strong italic angle and pointed serifs attached to some of the letterforms. The teams' above-mentioned logo is pulled directly from the "Phoenix" portion of the location wordmark.
The jersey number set, uniquely italicized as far as football uniforms go, mirrors the team wordmarks. It's drawn slightly taller and more condensed to adhere to the proportions that a football jersey allows.
Birds of Prey
With a striking new visual identity and graphic suite, the Phoenix Skyhawks are properly equipped in the event that this young team makes the big dance.
