Howdily Doodily! 👋

I'm John a senior product designer for Sweatcoin; an app which rewards your daily steps with a new-generation currency you can spend on cool products or donate to charity.

Sweatcoin has millions of users and is a number 1 app overall in over 60 countries.

So what was the brief?

The brief was to create versions of the home screen in 5 different languages; English, Spanish, German, Japanese and Arabic.

☝️ Sweatcoin Language Data

☝️ General Language Data

The stats above show the languages with at least 10M first language speakers. These are the essential languages for any product looking to scale globally.

☝️ English

The English version of the home screen was the best place to start.

The main components that needed translating were the header, the circle step counter, the weekly streaks, and the small cards in the carousel.

☝️ Spanish & German

The German and Spanish translated words in the small cards are longer and wider than the English so required the orientation of the cards to be more landscape than portrait to suit the text. The German cards especially needed to be wider as some of the button text was very long words.

☝️ Saudi Arabia & Japan

For the Saudi Arabian version of the UI I had to horizontally flip all components as the language is read right to left. The direction of the carousel also had to be reversed as well as the text alignment. The SA direction of the days of the week on the streak calendar also had to be mirrored. Buttons and CTA's with icons also had to be flipped so the icon appeared 'first' when reading R to L. Even though Japanese read R to L they subscribe to the conventional western approach of gestures like side swiping carousels and calendars being read and interacted with from L to R.
