Keiko is a television remote control to navigate the connected television. It was designed with the elderly in mind as a part of the Simple Interfaces collaboration between Parsons and EPFL+ECAL lab, 2011. Conceived, designed and prototyped with Marisela Riveros and Frederico Andrade.

Keiko was fabricated by the EPFL+ECAL lab and is now a part of the LazyBytes exhibition.

Abstract

Busy lifestyles rarely slow down, even while watching television. Some constantly flip through channels, use mobile devices, catch up on email and lose the TV remote.

Keiko introduces a different atmosphere: a relaxed and simple way to watch television. Inspired by the peaceful navigation of whales as they move through the depths of the ocean, Keiko offers a new experience that allows surfing through channels with a subtle touch.

Just like the glow of the television, Keiko radiates its own soothing light when the room is getting dark. It responds with the song of a humpback whale when you want to know where it is.
