The phrase is usually used in my country when you need to express some unsafe feeling. Maybe the closest English phrase is "walking on the edge".

Linocut represent one black cat on some relatively thin branch that separates night and day. The way he looking on a bright day is upside down, trying to highlight importance of perspective.

There is many symbols in this graphic, but maybe the strongest one is that never ending fight between good and bad.
