Step Tracking Mobile App

I tackled the challenge of designing a step tracking mobile app called 'Step Up' to promote employee well-being within organizations. The end goal of this project was to make sure it goes beyond just step counting; it fosters a culture of healthy competition, knowledge sharing, and goal setting, encouraging a more active lifestyle for employees of all ages, especially those in their middle years.

Human-Centered Design (HCD) in Action :-

The HCD approach guided the development of the app. Extensive user research, including interviews and focus groups with employees of varying age groups and technical backgrounds, revealed key needs mentioned below.

  • Simple and intuitive interface: The app should be easy to learn and navigate, even for users with limited technical experience.

  • Motivational features: Gamification elements like leaderboards and walkathons encourage friendly competition and boost engagement.

  • Personalized goals: Users crave the ability to set their own fitness goals, fostering a sense of ownership and accomplishment.

  • Actionable insights: Access to expert advice and knowledge empowers users to make informed decisions about their well-being.

Heuristics for Everyday Use :-

With these insights in mind, I designed the app adhering to established usability heuristics, ensuring an intuitive experience for all users.

  • Match real-world conventions: Familiar icons and metaphors make navigation effortless, minimizing the need for extensive tutorials.

  • Visibility of system status: Users receive clear feedback on their progress and the app's state, fostering a sense of control.

  • User control and freedom: Granular control over settings and notifications allows users to personalize their experience.

  • Error prevention: Clear labelling and data validation minimize the risk of errors during goal setting and data entry.

  • Help and documentation: Easy access to in-app tutorials and FAQs ensures users can find the information they need readily.

Catering to a Diverse Workforce :-

  • High contrast design: Large, easy-to-read fonts and a high contrast color scheme cater to users with age-related vision changes.

  • Minimal reliance on icons: Clear and concise text labels accompany all features, ensuring comprehension even for users who are less familiar with icons.

  • Simple and logical layout: An intuitive and uncluttered interface minimizes the need for extensive searching or learning complex interactions.

  • Accessibility features: The app is designed to be compatible with various accessibility settings on different devices.

Beyond Steps: A Holistic Approach :-

  • Pair with smart devices: Seamless integration with wearable devices ensures automatic step syncing, eliminating the need for manual entry.

  • View org location map: An intuitive map allows users to visualize their progress within the organization, fostering a sense of community.

  • Access walkathons: Engaging walkathons create friendly competition and encourage team building among colleagues.

  • Compete on leaderboards: Leaderboard visibility adds a fun element, motivating users to strive for improvement.

  • Learn from experts: Informative video content from fitness professionals provides valuable tips and guidance.

  • Engage with trivia: Interactive trivia quizzes keep users motivated and educated on wellness topics.

  • Set personal goals: Users can define personalized fitness goals to create a customized approach to well-being.
