Collecting items is a powerful mechanic that can be used to drive motivation.

When a collection set is nearly full, finding those images that you are missing becomes a big pre-occupation.

For Knowledgehook, young students can collect robot characters. They increase their chances of earning them as they answer more math questions. When this was released, I was not only shocked that students were answering more math questions, but some maxed out all the math questions available in their grade level and started creating multiple accounts to continue answering and collecting rare robots.

Creating rarity tiers really helped to enhance the engagement for kids! They were constantly showing off their collections to their classmates.
