This painting was published as a limited edition print, telling the extraordinary story of a German fighter ace with a heart...After pursuing a mortally-wounded American B-17 limping back to England after a 1943 bombing mission, he could not bring himself to shoot down the helpless crew, in fact at great risk to himself, actually wound up escorting them to safe passage. Over 50 years later, the 2 pilots, through queries to various veteran's publications found each other, and became close friends for the remainder of their lives. The success of the print inspired the writing of the life story of the two men, which became a NY Times bestseller of the same title, upon which this painting illustrates the cover. A truly inspiring tale!
