RIP Akira Toriyama April 5, 1955 – March 1, 2024 Dragon Ball Z

Akira Toriyama was raised by his parents in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture and also has an older sister with at least two children. He spent his childhood and most of his adult life in Kiyosu, which was then largely rural just outside of Nagoya. However, after his elementary school years, his interest in manga and cartoons waned, and his attention turned to live-action films such as Westerns, war and science films. Fiction. Going against his parents’ wishes, after his final year of high school, Toriyama decided not to continue studying at university and began his working life. He got his first job at age 20 as an in-house graphic designer at a small advertising agency in Nagoya. He resigned two and a half years later, largely because he was unhappy with his daily work routine. In 1977, Toriyama was looking for a job when he discovered the Monthly Youth Dance Award, a contest sponsored by Shueisha, Japan’s largest manga publishing company. He entered the RIP Akira Toriyama April 5, 1955 – March 1, 2024 Dragon Ball Z t-shirt twice, with Awawa World in 1977 and Mysterious Rain Jack in 1978, but failed to win. However, after Mysterious Rain Jack, Toriyama received a call from Kazuhiko Torishima, editor of Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, who advised him not to give up and to try harder.
