Redesign of the Logistic Management Tool
Redesign of the Logistic Management Tool
A company in transport and waste disposal wanted to redesign its logistic tool. Working closely with end-users, I improved the flow of managing orders and planning routes, resulting in a streamlined workflow of the shipping team and reduced costs.
Company Wants to Scale Its Services Nationwide
The transport company had ambitions to expand its operations across the country, but it wasn’t feasible for several reasons. The main issue was their internal logistic tool, which disrupted shippers' operations due to its poor performance, numerous limitations, and unintuitive interface. The other challenges were a lack of automatic processing for clients' orders and tracking drivers' activity.
Shippers Prefer Paper Over a Crashing Platform
During my visit to the company's office, I shadowed the shipping team to gain more insights into their daily routines and specific needs. The goal was to understand how the team uses the current tool, what are the key use cases, what works well, and what areas need improvement, with a focus on order management and route planning.
The main discoveries were:
- Shippers couldn’t rely on the system when taking new orders quickly, resulting in wasted time as they needed to input information twice – once on paper and then into the system.
- There was no centralised source for order details, leading to information being scattered across the application.
- There was no possibility of planning drivers' work in the context of their full workday, affecting shipping team effectiveness.
- The app user interface was not user-friendly and cluttered, making navigation and usage cumbersome.
Full Redesign of the Legacy Desktop Application
Building upon findings from the discovery phase, our primary challenge was to streamline the process of shipping team workflow. We aimed to simplify their daily tasks, optimize the platform's usability, and remove unnecessary features.
To address the main challenge, we executed the following:
- Simplified the flow of creating new orders by reducing form complexity, increasing the efficiency of the entire process.
- Introduced a unified order details dashboard for seamless management and access to all order-related data.
- Deployed a system for real-time monitoring of drivers' activities, improving decision-making in the route planning process.
- Upgraded to a custom map integration, enhancing system flexibility while lowering operational costs.
- Developed a comprehensive warehouse module that reflects all the company's assets, optimising resource management.
Optimised Workflow of the Shipping Team and Reduced Costs
Our efforts in redesigning the desktop application have resulted in tangible business outcomes. By significantly enhancing the user experience and usability, we laid the groundwork for improved efficiency across operations. Removing redundant features and rebuilding the application from scratch increased system performance. Furthermore, simplifying order management and the route planning process directly impacted the effectiveness of the shipping team and led to substantial resource savings.
