Conclusion
I have been a gamer all my life, but FromSoftware games have always been those I watch someone else play because I don't feel I'm cut out for it. For this bootcamp, I made myself download Elden Ring! I wasn't wrong, it was hard! but rewarding, especially when looking at it from a UX/UI frame of mind.
My background is largely composed of the healthcare and finance industries, and a little bit of ad-tech sprinkled in. However, my real motivator for becoming a UX UI Designer was video games. More specifically The Last of Us (and I have a tattoo to prove my love for the franchise!).
Thanks to Ivy and the bootcamp she crafted along with ELVTR, I was able to shape my skills and experience to match those in the gaming industry.
What I learned
Our role as UX/UI designers, while collaborating with multiple teams, specifically with Game Designers, is to inform design decisions that will help players have an immersive experience.
Usability tests are even more important in the gaming industry since most gamers play to experience new worlds and stories, but their perception, attention, and memory are different throughout, so their motivation will vary and it's important to understand what player persona we are designing for.
Accessibility tests connect these stories with demographics that are usually ignored, these are super important so that a game reaches as many people as possible, making it accessible for all!
