Doughty and McDonald grew up together in the Ocean Beach section of San Diego. By age 11, they got their first acoustic guitars, working with Metallica, Megadeth and Mötley Crüe. Nowell quickly became a champion of the group’s precocious talent, inviting them to play and signing Slightly Stoopid to his label Skunk Records. He confirmed them with Skunk co-founder Michael “Miguel” Happoldt, who agreed to record the band at Sublime’s Fake Nightclub studio in Long Beach. In 1996, they released their self-titled, punk-influenced debut studio album titled Slightly Stoopid. Although Nowell passed away shortly before the record was released, he posthumously appeared on the song “Prophet.”
