Music-Shaped Self | Pendulum '14
I'm excited to share with you all the second piece from the Helluva Grad Show exhibition at Gallery 1313, titled "Pendulum '14”. As part of my “Music-Shaped Self” series, this piece was inspired by the experimental, glitchy R&B music that I was grooving to in 2014 - think FKA twigs, Tinashe's Nightride, and SZA's Z EP!
As I listened to these amazing tracks, I was struck by the richness of the layered compositions and the organic, fluid shapes that they incorporated. So, I decided to create a self-portrait that would visually translate the complex sonic textures and rhythmic patterns of the music that inspired me in 2014.
In Pendulum '14, I used a harmonious colour palette featuring complementary shades to create a vibrant and dynamic piece that bursts with energy. The intricate, ornamental shapes that decorate the portrait reflect the complex layers of sound that exist within the music that I was listening to at that time.
Overall, this series is a joyous celebration of how music has the power to shape and inspire us as individuals. It is a testament to the deep connection between sound and visual art, and I'm thrilled to share it with all of you!
