WIP: Courting Dream Employers, 2024
In 2011 I courted my dream employer with a web page designed and developed by me. A sort of living, interactive love letter/résumé/cover letter hybrid. It worked! I spent nearly 8 years doing the best and most fulfilling work of my career — work that I’m still wildly proud of.
I’m on the hunt again for that dream position and up to my old tricks. This time I have a few organizations in my sights, one of which is The Criterion Collection. Much like the first job I landed using this technique, they aren’t technically hiring for this position (as far as I’m aware), but neither was that employer in 2011.
I’m not sure this approach carries the same impact as it did 12 years ago — anyone can create a Squarespace/Wix/etc. account these days and create a “custom” site. So I’m dressing it up with elements that could only be created from scratch: custom, topical animated illustrations; simple point-and-click games; etc.
Unlike most of what is shared on Dribbble these days, this work is very much in progress. I originally started this with the intent of creating a newspaper-like layout — an approach I’ve wanted to use for a site for some time. But I’m not entirely sure it’s going to be the best way to present myself here. So, this layout may end up getting stacked vertically instead.
For these screenshots I’ve replaced most of the actual content with lorem ipsum as it’s mostly for-their-eyes-only.
Either way, having a great time digging deep with these organizations in preparation for creating these pages, and hopeful it may again work in my favor.
Thank you for checking it out! And please, feel free to drop any thoughts about the idea or designs here.
