mercury drove me mad- the mad hatter

THE PROJECT:

This interactive hyper-docs project invited us to re-position a narrative of an existing book from the archival website, Authorama. We did this by re-using materials made from archival images from the public domain review. This was a six-week brief that allowed us to explore graphic design as a multidisciplinary process and lies within the context of experimental publishing. This project enabled us to explore physical and digital processes, by having access to a wide range of workshops that provided us with a range of skills.

THE APPROACH:

Given multiple choices on how to tackle this project, I have decided to re-position the narrative of Alice in Wonderland in order to draw attention to the Mad Hatter and his descent into madness, along with the other hatters in the 18th century. In response to the brief, I have created a twelve-page interactive document that illustrates the psychological responses experienced by the hatters as a result of mercury poisoning. The book incorporates 3D animations and interactive GIFs, which have been created based on archival images but have been re-illustrated to fit my theme. The visuals prominently feature my own illustrations, which have been taken through physical processes and then digitally reworked. The pages maintain a consistent flow of a dark color palette, deliberately setting an eerie and dramatic mood. While allowing vibrant spots of orange to seep through, I have ensured that a sense of boldness stands out on the pages.
